I have explored various styles of yoga

but it was the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli (from Diane Long & Sandra Sabatini) that made sense to my body, an approach to Hatha yoga which offers a different attitude to the body.

Having studied with TKV Desikachar, and at Vishwaguru Institute in India, I respect the traditions of yoga but also acknowledge a modern understanding of the anatomy and physiology that has been introduced to my body through the Alexander Technique, dance bodywork, martial arts and in my training with Gary Carter at Natural Bodies and John Stirk.

I continue to find inspiration and knowledge for my practice, and to bring to my yoga and dance teaching.

We pay attention to our breath

and how our body, in particular our spine, responds to the flow of the breath. We become interested in how we move into and out of asanas (postures) as well as the posture itself. We develop an understanding of our relationship with gravity which gives us fluidity and ease. This practice has a meditative quality as we are present from breath to breath. We may feel more yet do less.

The simplicity of this approach makes it accessible for 'every body'. Those with an existing practice are taken deeper into postures and find greater flexibility, core strength and inner space. The outward expression/the shape of the posture becomes less important than the inner awareness, the release of tension, and the awakening of the spine.
